Early in the Fall of 1976, a group of young boys from the recently closed Capper Jr High nervously arrived at French Jr High to try to join the Falcon football team.
At first they were met with resistance, mostly because things had changed for the French players. Newly arriving students meant competition for spots in the starting lineup. Also, French Jr High school colors were altered from Yellow and White to Yellow and Green by adding Capper Jayhawk green. It was an effort to welcome the Capper students to their new school, but was not well received by the French students. Thanks to the influence of Coach Goehring and Coach Laurie, a French football team that began the season divided began to gel.
Landon Jr High had faced similar changes. The other half of the former Capper Jr High football team went to Landon that Fall where they were initially taunted and struggled to fit in. As the season progressed, they too began to play as a team.
Landon had been dominate in Topeka Junior High football for several years. In fact, French had never beat Landon in the 9th grade game. Now it was time for the Capper enhanced rivals to meet at Landon Jr High.
This 8mm film was taken over thirty years ago. It later was converted to VHS tape that was recently rediscovered. The quality of the video is poor, but you can distinguish most of the on field play. Enjoy!
